The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team put on another impressive defensive performance on Saturday night in the McLeod Center, holding North Dakota State to 41 points on 14-of-54 shooting in a 60-41 victory. UNI improved to 7-2 on the season with the win.
UNI has now held five of its nine opponents to 50 points or less this season. NDSU's field goal percentage of 25.9 percent on Saturday night was a season-low for a UNI opponent.
Senior guard K.K. Armstrong once again led a balanced offensive attack, scoring 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Katelin Oney had 13 points for the Panthers, and Rachel Madrigal added 12.
Armstrong and Madrigal tied for the team lead with seven rebounds apiece, and Mercedees Morgan and Jess McDowell each added six boards. Morgan also had three assists, two steals and a block.
The Panthers overcame 2-of-16 shooting from three-point range in the win, by posting a 52-39 advantage in rebounds and a 36-22 margin in points in the paint.
The Panthers held a 34-19 halftime lead after limiting the Bison to 7-of-23 shooting (30.4 percent) in the first 20 minutes. UNI outscored NDSU 12-1 over the final 6:30 of the first half to stretch a 22-18 lead into the halftime margin. When UNI tallied the first four points of the second half, the 16-1 run was too much for the Bison to overcome.
UNI built its lead to 20 points at the 12:10 mark of the second half when redshirt freshman Brooke Brown made a bucket on her way to a career-high six points.
UNI plays next at North Dakota on Sat., Dec. 10, at 2 p.m.
NOTES: K.K. Armstrong passed the 900-point mark for her career against the Bison ... Armstrong sits at 913 points in 103 career games for the Panthers ... Armstrong is also one assist shy of entering the UNI all-time top-10 in career assists ... UNI entered the week as the sixth-best free throw shooting team in the nation, but made 10-of-19 attempts from the charity stripe tonight.
