Panther Volleyball Wins 3-0 At SDSU

BROOKINGS, S.D. - The No. 12 University of Northern Iowa volleyball team picked up its 17th straight win when it won 3-0 at South Dakota State Monday night in non-conference action. UNI (26-1) won by scores of 25-22, 25-20, 25-18.
Krista DeGeest led UNI with 13 kills, along with three blocks. Bre Payton hit .714 to finish with 11 kills, 32 assists and eight digs. Candice Burke finished with 13 digs, and Megan Lehman tallied nine kills and three blocks.
Kelli Fiegen led SDSU (13-18) with 10 kills.
UNI led by as many as six points, 16-10, in the first set, but SDSU was able to narrow the gap to one, 23-22. An attack error from SDSU gave UNI set point, and a kill from Shelby Kintzel gave the Panthers a 25-22 win.
With set two tied 12-12, UNI used a 4-1 run to take a 16-13 lead. The Panther advantage was cut to two, 19-17, and then the Panthers got kills from Lehman and Kintzel to double their advantage, 21-17. After SDSU scored a pair to pull back within two, a kill from DeGeest, a kill from Payton and another kill from DeGeest gave UNI set point, 24-19. SDSU scored to hold off the Panthers for a point, but DeGeest put down her sixth kill of the set to give the set to UNI, 25-20.
With set three tied 11-11, the Panthers rattled off six straight points to build a 17-11 advantage. UNI held on to at least a five-point lead on the way to the 25-18 win in the set and a 3-0 win in the match.
UNI hit .241 in the match, compared to .164 for South Dakota State. The Panthers recorded 6.0 team blocks, while SDSU finished with 6.0.
The Panthers return to action on Friday when they host Creighton at 6 p.m.
