UNI Opens Season With 63-46 Win at Old Dominion

NORFOLK, Va. - The University of Northern Iowa used its patented suffocating defense to open the 2011-12 season with a 63-46 win over Old Dominion University Saturday in the Ted Constant Convocation Center.
The Panthers (1-0 overall) were led by junior Jake Koch, who scored a game-high 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field. Koch buried a trio of 3-pointers and all three of his free throw attempts on the night. Junior Marc Sonnen also contributed with 12 points off the bench. Freshman Deon Mitchell secured a team-high six rebounds in his Panther debut.
UNI limited ODU to only four second-half field goals and held the Monarchs to 27.3 percent shooting from the field for the game. Offensively, UNI made 49 percent of its shots, including nine from 3-point land.
UNI did not allow ODU to score a basket in the second half from the 10:46 mark to the 2:34 mark.
UNI will travel to Moraga, Calif., to take on the Saint Mary's Gaels on Monday night at 11 p.m. (Pacific). The game will be televised live on ESPN.
NOTES: UNI improved to 2-1 all-time vs. ODU ... UNI has made a 3-pointer in 360 straight games ... UNI moved to 21-1 in the Ben Jacobson coaching era when holding the opposition to less than 50 points ... the Panthers made 6-of-7 free throws for the game, while ODU drained 17-of-25 at the charity stripe.
