
Panthers Open MVC Play with 4-3 Win over Drake

Des Moines, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa women's tennis team opened Missouri Valley Conference play today with a 4-3 victory on the road over Drake. UNI improves to 8-6 on the season and 1-0 in league play, while Drake falls to 5-7 overall and 0-1 in league play.
The Drake Bulldogs got things going early as they took home the doubles point. In the No. 1 spot, Gabriela Demos and Manca Krizman defeated UNI's Laia Gonzalez-Garrido and Talia Jang-Stewart 8-0. The Panthers bounced back as senior Sampada Kanade and sophomore Sampada Kanade gets her 11th win of the season as she beat Jessica Aguilera 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 3 spot. Sophomore Jessica Kunzelmann also earned her 11th win of the season as she cruised by Drake's Labarte 6-1, 6-0. In the No. 6 position, freshman Stefannia Sampaio secured the win as she topped Earlynn Lauer 6-3, 6-2.
“It was a really hard fought win and I am really proud of the way the girls played today. This match was a great way to kick off our conference season,” said head Coach Sachin Kirtane.
The Panthers hit the road next weekend for two conference matches in two days. UNI takes on Wichita State on Saturday and then faces Creighton on Sunday.
