Panthers Ground Flyers 10-0 in Season Opener

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Livi Abney tallied two home runs, including a walk-off grand slam, and seven RBI to pace the Panthers to a 10-0 five-inning win over Dayton Friday night in the first game of the UNI-Dome Classic.
Jen Larsen (1-0) picked up the win for UNI (1-0), giving up just two hits through five shutout innings and retiring the last eight batters she faced.
Abney, Larsen and Megan Machovec each notched two hits for UNI, and the Panthers collected 10 hits as a team. Four of the Panthers' 10 hits came for extra bases, including a home run from Allison Galvin and a triple by Machovec.
Eva Rappe (0-1) was charged with the loss for Dayton (0-1), giving up six earned runs through two innings.
Abney put the Panthers on the board with a two-run home run to right in the bottom of the first, scoring Larsen, who had reached on a line-drive single off the pitcher.
Sarah Bakey and Lindsay Callanan drew walks, and Mackenzie Daigh dropped a single into center to load the bases with two out in the bottom of the second. Larsen singled to short to score Bakey and keep the bases loaded. Abney drew a full-count walk to notch her third RBI of the game. Larsen and Eranne Daugharthy followed with RBI singles to put the Panthers in front 5-0.
Galvin led off the bottom of the third with a solo home run to center, putting the Panthers in front, 6-0.
The Panthers loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth, and Abney followed with a two-out homer into center that gave UNI a 10-0 lead and a run-rule win.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday when they face North Dakota at 11 a.m. and Valparaiso at 3 p.m. in the UNI-Dome.
