FORT WORTH, Texas - Senior point guard Kwadzo Ahelegbe led the University of Northern Iowa men's basketball team to a 64-60 road win over TCU on Saturday as he tallied a season-high 25 points.
UNI improved to 4-2 on the year, while TCU lost its first home game of the season and fell to 6-3 overall.
Ahelegbe shot 8-of-13 shots from the field, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. Coming into the game, Ahelegbe had made 1-of-18 from 3-point land this season. Junior guard Johnny Moran was the only other Panther to reach double figures as he tallied 10 points.
TCU led 44-40 following a pair of free throws from Nikola Gacesa with 10:26 left in the game. But back-to-back possessions where UNI's Lucas O'Rear scored a conventional 3-point play and another where he scored a basket and was fouled allowed the Panthers to retake the lead at 45-44. TCU's Sammy Yeager put the Horned Frogs back on a top with a shot in the lane.
However, that would be the final lead for the Horned Frogs as Ahelegbe promptly drilled his third 3-pointer of the contest from the left corner and UNI took a 48-46 lead.
TCU tied the game again at 56-56 on another set of free throws from Gacesa with 3:23 left. UNI sophomore forward Jake Koch scored the next four points in the game to give UNI a four-point lead down the stretch.
TCU would eventually have a chance to tie the game in the final 30 seconds but a 3-pointer from Ronnie Moss was off the mark and the Panthers salted away the win with free throws for the four-point triumph.
