Football Falls 30-14 at Western Illinois in Regular-Season Finale

MACOMB, Ill. – The University of Northern Iowa football team fell 30-14 at Western Illinois in its regular-season finale Saturday afternoon at Hanson Field.
The Panthers were held to a season-low 265 yards of total offense, while the Leathernecks collected 527 yards of offense, the most allowed by UNI this season.
Zach Davis was 10-of-23 passing with two touchdowns after entering in the second quarter for Tirrell Rennie, who left the game with an injury. Jarred Herring finished with six catches for 111 yards and two touchdowns. Jordan Smith notched 2 tackles, including 1.5 for loss.
WIU's Matt Barr finished 16-of-23 for 298 passing yards and two touchdowns passing. Caulton Ray had 153 yards and one rushing touchdown on 31 carries. The Leatherneck defense tallied six sacks and nine tackles for loss.
The first half was all Western Illinois, as the Leathernecks racked up 322 offensive yards through the first 30 minutes of action. Barr was 12-of-15 for 177 yards and a touchdown in the first half, and Ray rushed for 81 first-half yards and a touchdown to help the Leathernecks build a 20-0 halftime lead.
Bryce Flowers took a screen pass from Barr 87 yards early in the third quarter to add another touchdown to the WIU lead. The Leathernecks converted an interception into a field goal to extend its lead to 30-0 with 8:54 left in the third.
The Panthers drove 80 yards on their ensuing possession, capping the drive with a 26-yard pass from Davis to Jarred Herring to cut the UNI deficit 30-7 with 3:24 left in the quarter.
UNI tallied another score late in the fourth quarter when Davis hit Herring with a 36-yard touchdown pass to put the final score at 30-14.
The Panthers, who secured a spot in the FCS playoffs by finishing as MVFC Champion, will learn who and when they will play next when the FCS playoff field is announced Sunday at 9 a.m. on ESPNU.
