Panthers Pick Up Dual Wins Over McKendree, UW-Parkside, Fall to No. 20 Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill. – The University of Northern Iowa wrestling team picked up its first dual wins of the 2010-11 season Sunday, topping McKendree and UW-Parkside before falling to host and No. 20-ranked Northwestern at the Northwestern Duals.
UNI picked up 34-9 decision over McKendree to open the day followed by a 34-6 win over UW-Parkside. No. 20 Northwestern topped the Panthers 26-6 in the final match of the day.
Nick Pickerell (165 lbs.) and Christian Brantley (285 lbs.) each finished the day with perfect 3-0 records.

UNI opened the day with a convincing 34-9 victory over McKendree. The Panthers won seven of the ten duals, picking up bonus points in five of the matches.
Steven Fitzgerald at 133 pounds to pull the score within 6-3.
That was as close as the score would be as UNI would win the next five matches with Aaron Senzee picking up a 5-0 win at 141 pounds followed by a pin from Jamal Lawrence at 149 pounds. David Bonin (157 lbs.), Nick Pickerell (165 lbs.) and Brice Wolf (174 lbs.) recorded consecutive technical falls, putting the Panthers up 30-3 with three matches remaining.
McKendree earned wins at 184 lbs. and 197 lbs. before Christian Brantley earned a major decision victory at 285 pounds to give the Panthers a 34-9 win.

vs. UW-Parkside The Panthers continued to roll in the second dual of the day, picking up a 34-6 win over UW-Parkside. The Panthers won nine of the ten matches, picking up bonus points in four of the nine wins. Flores (125 lbs.), Fitzgerald (133 lbs.) and Senzee (141 lbs.) picked up decision wins for the Panthers before Lawrence earned a major decision win over Dave Edwards at 149 lbs. Bonin (157 lbs.) and Pickerell (165 lbs.) picked up decisions to put the Panthers up 20-0 before Luke Rynish pinned Jarion Beets to put UW-Parkside on the board. Northern Iowa 34, UW-Parkside 6 vs. Northwestern No. 20-ranked Northwestern built an early lead on the Panthers, winning the first five matches before Nick Pickerell put the Panthers on the board with a 6-2 decision over Kevin Bialka at 165 pounds. Leading 17-3, Northwestern picked up wins at 174, 184 and 197 pounds before Christian Brantley secured a 5-3 decision over Ben Kuhar at the heavyweight slot. Northwestern 26, Northern Iowa 6
UNI returns to the mat next Saturday hosting Old Dominion. The match is slated to begin at 2 p.m. in the West Gym.

Ryan Loder (184 lbs.) put the Panthers back on the winning track with a 13-3 major decision win before Joe Johnson earned a forfeit at 197 pounds. Christian Brantley wrapped up the dual for the Panthers with a major decision win over James Malachek, giving UNI the 34-6 dual win.
