VERMILLION, S.D. – The University of Northern Iowa football team held South Dakota scoreless through most of the second half to secure a 19-14 win over the Coyotes Saturday afternoon in the DakotaDome. Billy Hallgren kicked a career-high four field goals, and Tirrell Rennie punched in the Panthers' only touchdown.
The Panthers racked up 434 yards on offense. Rennie finished passing 18-of-26 for 265 yards. He also rushed for 46 yards. Matt Strathman finished with 42 yards rushing. Jarred Herring had five catches for 74 yards, including a 48-yard catch in the first quarter.
The Panthers (3-3) recorded four tackles for loss, including a pair of sacks. Jamar Thompson led UNI with nine tackles, and Andre Martin finished with seven tackles and an interception.
South Dakota tallied 271 yards of offense, led by Dante Warren's 189 yards passing. The Panthers held USD to just 1-of-11 on third-down conversions.
UNI looked like it would score on its opening drive when the Panthers lined up for a 40-yard field goal attempt. The Panthers fumbled the snap, however, and UNI holder Kyle Bernard fell on it for a loss of 21 yards.
South Dakota went on the board first when the Coyotes took advantage of a short field and capped a 31-yard drive with a 19-yard pass play from Warren to Will Powell with 4:58 left in the first quarter.
The Panthers got field goals from Billy Hallgren on each of its next two possessions, from 27 and 32 yards, to cut USD's lead to 7-6 with 12:25 left in the first half.
Hallgren capped a 42-yard drive with a 42-yard field goal on UNI's opening drive of the second half, putting the Panthers in front for the first time, 9-7 with 9:52 left in the third quarter.
USD attempted a field goal that would have put them in front 10-9 with 2:59 left in the third quarter, but it fell short to preserve the UNI lead.
The Panthers capitalized by driving 78 yards over the next 5:40 to score their only touchdown of the game, coming on a three-yard rush from Rennie to extend UNI's lead to 16-7 with 12:26 left to play.
Hallgren added three points to UNI's lead with a 31-yard field goal with 4:26 on the clock.
South Dakota scored on a 38-yard pass into the endzone with four seconds left, but UNI recovered the ensuing onside kick to secure the victory.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday when they host Illinois State at 4:05 p.m. in the UNI-Dome.
NOTES: Hallgren's four field goals are the most made by the Panthers since Brian Wingert connected on four attempts against Minnesota State on Sept. 11, 2004 … the victory is UNI's first road win since winning at North Dakota State on Oct. 10, 2009.
