CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team was edged 3-1 by No. 12 Iowa State in front of a record 6,126 people Wednesday night in the McLeod Center. ISU claimed the win by scores of 25-23, 25-23, 16-25 and 25-23.
Bre Payton, Michelle Burow and Beth Discher each had 11 kills for UNI (2-2), and Amy Braun added 10. Payton also finished with 29 assists, and Ellie Blankenship led UNI with 32 digs.
Rachel Hockaday led the Cyclones (3-0) with 18 kills, and Kaylee Manns led ISU with 42 assists.
Neither team held more than a two-point lead until ISU scored five straight points to build a 13-10 advantage in the first set. The teams were knotted at 17 and 18, and the Cyclones scored consecutive points to break the 21-21 tie and take a 23-21 edge. The Panthers pulled it within one on a kill by Burow, but ISU scored on a kill from Hockaday to make it set point, 24-22. Discher came up with a kill that pulled UNI within one, 24-23, but Carly Jenson was able to score for the Cyclones to give ISU the first set, 25-23.
ISU used nine straight points early in the second set to take an 11-1 lead. ISU maintained at least an eight-point lead through much of the set, and took a 17-7 lead on a kill by Debbie Stadick.
UNI outscored the Cyclones 11-3 over the next stretch, cutting the ISU lead to 20-18. Iowa State stretched its lead back to four, 22-18, and it took a 24-20 lead on a kill from Manns. The Panthers fought off three set points to pull within one, 24-23, but Iowa State scored on a kill from Kelsey Petersen to take the second set, 25-23.
The Panthers came out of the break fast, building an early 7-2 lead in the third set. ISU trimmed it to one, 10-9, but the Panthers were able to stretch their lead back to five, 18-13. The teams traded a pair of points to take the score to 20-15. UNI scored five of the set's final six points to win the set, 25-16.
ISU used a five-point run to take an early 7-4 lead in the fourth set. After the Panthers cut the Cyclone lead to 8-9, ISU scored three straight points to build a four-point lead, 12-8. Trailing 16-12, the Panthers scored five of six points to take an 18-17 lead. ISU scored three quick points to reclaim the lead, however, 20-18. The Cyclones stretched their lead to 24-20, but UNI was able to fend off three straight set points once again, using a kill from Payton to pull back within one, 24-23. Jenson came up with a kill for ISU, however, to give the Cyclones the set and the match.
UNI's attendance record broke the mark set on Nov. 18, 2006, when 5,522 fans came to see the Panthers host Bradley in the first event in the McLeod Center.
The Panthers return to action on Friday when they play Northern Illinois and Ohio in the Middle Tennessee Blue Raider Bash.
