Softball Splits Doubleheader with Nebraska

LINCOLN, Nebraska - The UNI softball team split a doubleheader with Big 12 foe Nebraska this afternoon in Lincoln. The Huskers cruised to a 7-2 win in game one behind a complete game six-hitter from Molly Hill. The Panthers then dug themselves an early 3-0 hole in game two, but scored the final six runs of the game to earn a 6-3 win. The Panthers are now 31-18 on the year, while the Huskers stand at 31-13.
Game One: Nebraska 7, UNI 2
The Huskers cruised to a 7-2 win in game one of the doubleheader behind Ashley Duran's 3-for-3 performance at the plate and three RBIs, while senior Molly Hill (21-9) pitched a complete game six-hitter and struck out six batters. UNI junior Jen Larsen (17-10) took the loss after tossing scattering six hits and four runs in 3 2/3 innings.
The Panthers plated the first run of the game in the top of the second inning after senior Kelly Papesh's RBI single to left field drove in senior Morgan Paulson. Paulson led off the inning with a single to left center.
The Huskers then took their first lead of the contest after scoring two runs on two hits in the bottom of the third inning thanks to Crystal Carwile's two-run homer, her fifth of the year.
The Huskers added two more runs on two hits in the bottom of the fourth inning after Meghan Mullin's RBI groundout and Amanda Duran's RBI single up the middle to up their lead to 4-1.
The Panthers cut into the Huskers lead in the top of the fifth inning after freshman Megan Machovec's fielder's choice.
Nebraska added three more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on Duran's two-RBI single and a Panther fielding error allowed another run to score to push the score to final margin, 7-2.
UNI junior Rachel Gerking went 2-for-3 at the plate and extended her hitting streak to 11 games.
Game Two: UNI 6, Nebraska 3
The Panthers scored the final six runs of the game, including three runs in the top of the seventh inning to earn a 6-3 win in game two of the doubleheader. The Panthers took advantage of five Husker errors and out-hit the Huskers, 8-3. Sophomore Eranne Daugharthy was the star at the plate for the Panthers going 3-for-4 with two RBI and a home run.
Redshirt freshman Jen Larsen RBI groundout allowed another unearned Panther run to score.
Notes: The Panthers are 22-9 away from home and 13-6 in true road games...Junior Rachel Gerking extended her 12-game hitting streak...Sophomore Eranne Daugharthy hit her third home run of the season...The Panthers have hit a school record total of 46 home runs on the season, which ranks them eighth on the MVC single-season team home run list... The Panthers are 4-5 against Big 12 foes this season...The Huskers lead the all-time series 17-3...Nebraska is 12-4 at home this season...UNI head coach Ryan Jacobs is 2-3 all-time against the Huskers.
Up Next: The Panthers will travel to Normal, Ill., to play a three-game series against Illinois State on Saturday and Sunday (April 25-26). Game one of the doubleheader on Saturday will start at noon. The Redbirds are 8-8 in MVC play and 20-21 overall. The Redbirds won two of three games against the Panthers last season.
