Panthers Fall at South Dakota State, 71-58, in Non-Conference Finale

BROOKINGS, S.D. - The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team was able to trim a 16-point South Dakota State lead to seven, but it was never able to pull any closer in a 71-58 loss Monday night at Frost Arena. K.K. Armstrong led UNI (4-7) with a season-high 18 points. Kim Wypiszynski finished with 14 points, and Jacqui Kalin added 10. Erin Brocka notched a season-high 10 rebounds for the Panthers. Kristin Rotert led the Jackrabbits (6-6) with 24 points, and Jill Young added 10. Leah Dietel finished with nine points and 10 rebounds for SDSU. The Panthers cut an early 8-3 SDSU lead to 10-9 when K.K. Armstrong scored on a layup at 12:20. The Jacks scored the next eight points, however, to stretch their advantage to 18-9. With the Panthers trailing 22-13, K.K. Armstrong scored on a reverse layup. Lizzie Boeck followed with a layup to pull UNI within five, but a basket from Jill Young put the Jacks back in front by seven, 24-17. Boeck found Armstrong on the block for a layup, and Amber Kirschbaum scored at the post to cut the UNI deficit to three, 24-21. SDSU scored the next five points to stretch their lead to eight, 29-21, with 1:55 left in the half. Danielle Wubbens made a free throw with 24 seconds on the clock to send the Panthers into the break trailing 31-24. Rotert scored a three-point play out of the break to give SDSU a double-digit lead, 34-24. Nicole Clausen knocked down a three from the right baseline to bring the Panthers back within seven, but the Jacks scored the next nine points to take a 43-27 lead with 16:21 to play. With SDSU leading 44-29, Kirschbaum knocked down a jumper and Armstrong connected on a pair of free throws to cut the UNI deficit to 11, 44-33. Armstrong and Maria Boever traded baskets, and Rotert converted a free throw to put the Jackrabbit lead at a dozen, 47-35 with 13:38 to play. Kalin drained a jump shot to pull UNI within 10, 47-37 with 13:20 to play. Clausen turned an Armstrong steal into a layup to cut the UNI deficit to single digits, 47-39, but SDSU scored six straight to extend its lead to 53-39. UNI pulled back within 12, 55-43, with 7:30 to play. The Jacks scored four quick points to match their largest lead of the game, 59-43 with 6:49 remaining. The Panthers scored the game's next nine points, seven of them at the free-throw line, to narrow the gap to 59-52 with 4:33 remaining. South Dakota State used a pair of free throws from Boever and a three from Rotert to stretch its lead back to 12, 64-52. Wypiszynski made a pair of free throws to cut the SDSU advantage to 10, but Ketty Cornemann drained a three from the right wing to put the score at 67-54 with 2:27 to play. Macie Michelson converted a pair of free throws at 1:43 to put the score at 69-54. The Panthers were unable to pull any closer than 13 from that point. UNI shot 20-of-56 (35.7 percent) from the floor, including 1-of-14 (7.1 percent) from three-point range. UNI finished 17-of-22 (77.3 percent) from the free-throw line. The Jackrabbits shot 22-of-55 (40 percent) from the floor, including 8-of-17 (47.1 percent) from three-point range. SDSU was 19-of-25 (76 percent) from the free-throw line. The Panthers return to action on Thursday when they open Missouri Valley Conference play at Wichita State.
