CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa wrestling team suffered a 48-3 loss at the hands of the No. 1-ranked University of Iowa Thursday night in Iowa City, Iowa.
They're physically more aggressive than us,” UNI head coach Brad Penrith said. “That's the best I've seen Iowa wrestle in a long time. Up and down the lineup they were very physical and very aggressive. Now we need to regroup, we have a big dual against Wisconsin at home Saturday.”
No.17-ranked Christian Brantley was the bright spot for the Panthers, notching a 3-2 win over Iowa's Blake Rasing at the heavyweight slot.
Brantley scored a takedown at the 2:46-minute mark of the first period to take an early 2-0 lead. Rasing scored two points off escapes to tie the score at 2-2 with 1:56 left in the second period. Brantley secured the win in the third period with an escape of his own.
Iowa showed their power at home, notching six pins and three major decisions over the visiting Panthers.
UNI (3-4, 0-0 Western Wrestling Conference) returns to Cedar Falls Saturday to host their second Big Ten foe of the week, taking on Wisconsin. Action from the West Gym is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
