
Volleyball Beats Illinois State 3-1 For 14th Straight Win

The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team extended its win streak to 14 when it took a 3-1 win at Illinois State Saturday night at Redbird Arena. UNI won the match by scores of 25-9, 21-25, 25-23 and 25-21 to remain perfect at 7-0 in league play and improve to 16-2 overall.
Shannon Aschoff led the Panthers with 14 kills, and Michelle Burow finished with 12. Bre Payton finished with 43 assists, and Amy Braun and Ellie Blankenship tallied 19 and 18 digs, respectively. Payton, Burow and Beth Discher each finished with four blocks.
Leading 13-9, the Panthers scored 12 straight points to end the first set and claim a 25-9 win. UNI held the Redbirds (9-10, 3-5 MVC) to -.200 hitting in the set.
Illinois State rebounded in the second set. With the set tied at 19-19, ISU outscored the Panthers 6-2 to give the Redbirds the 25-21 set win and send the teams into the break tied 1-1.
The Panthers used an 8-1 run to stretch a 10-9 lead into an 18-10 advantage in the third set. ISU responded with a 5-0 run that cut the Panther edge to 18-15. The Redbirds continued to chip away at the UNI lead. With the Panthers leading 24-22, ISU fought off set point to make it a one-point game, 24-23. A Redbird attack error gave the Panthers the 25-23 set win.
The Panthers broke a 15-15 tie with a 4-0 run in the fourth set, giving UNI a 19-15 lead. ISU scored three straight to pull within a point, 18-19. UNI scored the next two points and held at least a two-point lead the rest of the way, winning the set 25-21.
UNI outhit the Redbirds, .203 to .084, and the Panthers outblocked ISU, 16-6.
UNI returns to action on Friday when it hosts Wichita State.
