
Panthers Sweep Indiana State

Terre Haute, Ind. - Senior outside hitter Amy Sampson had a team-leading 10 kills as the University of Northern Iowa volleyball team posted a 3-0 sweep of Indiana State Saturday night. Set scores were 25-21, 25-17 and 25-16. The victory improves UNI to 14-1 overall and a perfect 4-0 in the Missouri Valley Conference, while Indiana State falls to 6-9, 1-3 in the Valley.
Shannon Aschoff had nine kills, six digs and four blocks, and Michelle Burow had six kills and a team-best six blocks for the Panthers. Sophomore libero Ellie Blankenship had a match-high 14 digs.
Indiana State jumped to leads to 5-0, 9-3 and 13-6 to open the match. With ISU holding a 16-11 advantage, UNI battled back by scoring five straight points - including two on service aces from Blankenship - to even the score. The score was still tied at 19 when UNI reeled off three straight points to pull ahead for good, and the Panthers were able to make that lead hold up in a 25-21 victory.
UNI built a 7-1 lead to start the second set, as Burow and Beth Discher each had a pair of early kills. The Panthers extended their lead to 13-4 after a Sampson kill, and UNI held at least a seven point lead the rest of the way en route to a 25-17 win. The Panthers hit .324 in the second set to just .107 by the Sycamores.
With the score tied at four in set three, Indiana State scored three straight to move in front 7-4. The Panthers came back to pull even at nine as Jessa Benson had a service ace to tie the match. UNI took the lead for good, 12-11, as Aschoff and Ashten Stelken teamed up on a block. Holding a 17-15 advantage, UNI ended the match on an 8-1 run, with Sampson having four kills down the stretch, as the Panthers claimed a 25-18 victory.
UNI returns home to face Saint Louis on Tues., Sept. 30. First serve from the McLeod Center is set for 7:00 pm.
