CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois completed a three game sweep of the University of Northern Iowa softball team, topping the Panthers 7-1 and 6-1 Sunday.

The Salukis used a four-run inning to propel them to a 7-1 win in game one, then used a five-run inning in the second game to break away from the Panthers, 6-1.

In the first game, UNI put their solo run of the game on the board off a Jen Larsen (Moline, Ill./Moline) RBI single.

Megan Machovec (DeWitt, Iowa/Central) led the way for the Panthers at the plate, going two-for-three. Stephanie Aguero (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine) finished one-for-two, including a double.

The second game proved to be much closer than the final score would indicate. The score was deadlocked at 1-1 until Southern Illinois used an explosive five-run sixth frame to take the 6-1 win.

Southern Illinois struck first in the second game, with an RBI single from Katie Wilson in the bottom of the first.

UNI knotted the score at 1-1 in the top of the fourth frame when Chelle Phillips (Waukee, Iowa/Waukee) opened the frame with a double. Sarah Bakey (West Des Moines, Iowa/ Valley) then hit a single RBI put the Panthers on the board.

With the score tied at 1-1, Lauren Hass hit a three RBI homerun that began the Salukis hot-hitting inning, followed by three singles that pushed two runs across.

UNI was unable to respond in the top of the seventh, and the Salukis held on for the 6-1 win.

Phillips finished the second game two-for-three at the plate, including one double.

Larsen was tagged for the loss in the second game, pitching her fifth complete game of the season.

UNI (10-12, 0-3 MVC) will complete their road trip with trip to Louisville, Ky. to take on the University of Louisville Tuesday, March 18 at 3:00 p.m.
