Cedar Falls, Iowa - Shannon Aschoff and Beth Discher led the offensive attack for the University of Northern Iowa volleyball team in its 3-0 win over Bradley tonight at the McLeod Center. Aschoff led the Panthers with 12 kills while Discher finished with 10. Set scores were 25-11, 25-20 and 25-13.
The Panthers finished the night with a .402 hitting percentage, while holding the Braves to just .022. The Braves are the seventh UNI opponent this season to be held under .100 hitting.
Bradley opened the first set with a 3-0 run, but back-to-back kills by Aschoff and Discher started a 5-0 scoring run for the Panthers. A service ace by sophomore libero Ashten Stelken put the Panthers up 9-3. The Braves never got within five points of the Panthers the rest of the way, and the UNI took the set 25-11.
After falling behind 2-0 at the beginning of the second set, UNI went on a 10-2 scoring run that saw consecutive ace serves from Blankenship. The Braves closed the gap and fought back, getting within 20-18, before a service ace from Bre Payton and a kill by Michelle Burow extended the lead to 23-18. Discher and Aschoff both added kills to end the Braves hope at a comeback and secured the set for UNI, 25-20.
The third set was a game of scoring runs as Bradley went on a 7-2 run to tie the score at 10-10. An attack error by the Braves and a kill by Discher, sparked an 18-3 run by the Panthers to take the third set 25-13.
UNI (17-2, 7-0 MVC) returns to the court Oct. 17 when it travels to Wichita State. First serve from Charles Koch Arena is set for 7 pm.
