CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa wrestling team secured its second straight win of the season with a 36-6 dual win over the University of Northern Colorado on Saturday in the McLeod Center.
UNI won eight matches on the day, while UNC notched two victories. UNI improved to 3-4-1 on the year, and UNC dropped to 3-5 overall. UNI also moved to 2-0 in the WWC standings.
"We still have some big duals coming up but we had a good weekend," head coach Brad Penrith said. "I thought we wrestled well and improved from yesterday to today. We attacked more and kept the pressure on."
The Panthers took control early by winning the first four matches on the day, including bonus points in all four.
Junior Moza Fay scored a 17-5 major decision over UNC's Devan Lewis to begin the dual at 165 pounds. Senior Alex Dolly also scored a major decision at 174 pounds with a 20-10 win over UNC's Ryan Johnson.
"The team is wrestling really tough right now and it's nice to not have to wrestle against the top-ranked teams every time out," Fay said. "It's good to have a check point at this point of the season. Today's match was a good warmup for our upcoming competition against Oklahoma State."
Senior Danny Dunning was awarded a forfeit victory at 184 pounds, and junior Andrew Anderson scored his second straight fall with a pin at the 1:22 mark of the first period in his match with UNC's Patrick Carey at 197 pounds. After four matches, UNI had bolted to a 20-0 lead in the dual.
"I wasn't happy with my performance yesterday but turned it around and did well today," Anderson said. "It's kind of hard mentally to wrestle back-to-back days but it helps prepare you for the national tournament."
UNC got on the board with a pair of wins at heavyweight and 125 pounds. UNC's Reece Hopkin scored a 3-2 win over UNI's Dustin Bauman, and UNC's Tony Mustari notched a 6-2 victory over UNI's Caleb Flores.
The Panthers then finished off the dual with four more consecutive victories at 133, 141, 149 and 157.
Junior Josh Baldridge recorded a 5-2 win over UNC's Blayze Bahe at 133 pounds. Senior C.J. Ettelson tallied a first-period fall over UNC's Richard Lohr at 141 pounds.
Redshirt freshman Nick Pickerell recovered from an early 5-0 deficit to rally for a 16-7 win over UNC's Daniel Prater at 149 pounds. Pickerell used a trio of three-point nearfalls to complete the comeback.
Redshirt freshman Seth Pugh finished off the dual with an 11-8 win over Rocco DePaolo at 157 pounds. Pugh trailed 7-4 midway through the second period, before he scored seven straight points to take control of the match.
The Panthers will be in action Jan. 25 at Oklahoma State at 7 p.m. in Stillwater, Okla.
