
UNI Sweeps Wright State

Cedar Falls, Iowa - Amy Sampson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) had 15 kills and Ashten Stelken (Manchester, Iowa) added 14 to lead the University of Northern Iowa volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Wright State this afternoon in the UNI Invitational. Game scores were 30-19, 30-21 and 30-13.
Setter Kristin Belzung (Ankeny, Iowa) had a double-double, with 41 assists and 10 digs. The Panthers hit a sizzling .419 (53-9-105) as a team for the match, while holding Wright State to .071 hitting (24-17-98). UNI also had 14 service aces, including career highs of six by Shannon Aschoff (Ankeny, Iowa) and four by Danielle Brazda (Omaha, Neb.).
Wright State scored the first three points of the match, but UNI responded with six straight to take the lead for good. Brazda had two service aces and redshirt freshman Beth Discher (Grimes, Iowa), making her first career appearance, added a kill during that stretch. Leading 11-7, UNI then went on a 7-1 run to open an 18-8 advantage, and held a double-digit lead the rest of the way, eventually posting a 30-19 win. UNI hit .371 (15-2-35) in the first game, with six service aces.
UNI jumped on the Raiders early in game two, opening a 16-2 lead, and never looked back. Aschoff had two kills and three service aces, while Stelken recorded three kills, during that decisive early stretch. A late run by Wright State pulled the Raiders within seven, 25-18, but UNI was able to put the game away, 30-21. UNI hit even better in game two with a .457 percentage (21-5-35).
Leading 13-9 in game three, UNI used another big run to put the match away. The Panthers scored seven straight points, and 17 of the final 21 in the game, to claim the 30-13 win. Stelken had five kills and Sampson added four in game four.
With the victory, UNI improves to 2-0 on the season, while Wright State falls to 0-2. Later today in the UNI Invitational, Western Michigan faces Wright State at 5:00 pm, and UNI squares off with Kentucky at 7:30 pm. This morning, Western Michigan defeated Kentucky, 3-0. Game scores in that match were 30-27, 30-28 and 30-26.
