UNI Falls to Drake, 67-59

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa men's basketball squad dropped a 67-59 decision to the Drake Bulldogs on Thursday night in the McLeod Center.
UNI fell to 16-9 overall and 7-7 in the Missouri Valley Conference, while Drake improved to 13-12 overall and 4-10 in the league.
The Panthers led early in the game by a 9-4 count at the 16:40 mark of the first half. But the Bulldogs answered with an 8-0 run to take a 12-9 lead with 13:29 remaining in the first half. UNI's last lead of the game came at the 6:43 mark of the first half when Travis Brown drained a jumper. The Bulldogs bounced back with another 8-0 run to regain the lead they would never relinquish. Drake took a 28-22 lead at the intermission.
Drake opened up a 10-point margin in the opening minutes of the second half at 34-24. The Panthers then whittled away at the lead and trimmed it to two at 50-48 at the 5:39 mark of the second half.
UNI's Brooks McKowen drained back-to-back-to-back three pointers in the final four minutes of the game, but Drake answered each bucket with a basket of its own. McKowen's last trifecta came at the 2:27 mark and it left the Panthers trailing 60-57. But Drake's Klayton Korver hit a jumper at the 2:02 mark and UNI could draw no closer the rest of the way.
UNI's Grant Stout led the Panthers' effort with 17 points and 14 rebounds against the Bulldogs. Eric Coleman chipped in with 15 points and eight rebounds. McKowen scored 13 and Jared Josten netted 10 points in the loss.
Drake was led by Josh Young's 15-point game. Ajay Calvin and Nick Grant each knocked in 14 points. Al Stewart dished out a game-high 10 assists and scored eight points in the win.
UNI will be in action again Saturday against Missouri State at 7:05 p.m. in the McLeod Center.
