University of Northern Iowa true freshman Dorian Ulrey (Port Byran, Ill./Riverdale) broke the indoor school record in the mile run today at the Iowa State Classic, taking second in the event. With a time of 4:02.53 he shattered the previous school record of 4:04.64 set by Balasz Csillag in 2000 and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships. In his first season as a Panther, Ulrey already holds two school records. He set the indoor 1,000-meter run record earlier this season.
Junior Terrence Reid (Davenport, Iowa) and sophomore Tyler Mulder (Orange City, Iowa/MOC Floyd Valley) also provisionally qualified in their respective events. Reid took seventh in the 400-meter dash with a time of 47.12. Mulder ran to an indoor personal-best time of 1:49.15 in the 800-meter run; this is the second consecutive week Mulder has clocked in faster than the provisionally qualifying mark.
Competing unattached, freshman Phil Hanson (Pontiac, Ill./Pontiac Township) jumped 16-1.25 in the pole vault, claiming seventh and freshman Mike Beese (Naperville, Ill./North) also leapt 16-01.25 to take 11th. Freshman Ehi Oamen (Hinton, Iowa/Hinton) jumped 6-9.75 in the high jump. Sophomore Ryan Grenko (Iowa City, Iowa/City High) placed 10th in the 400 with a time of 47.43.
UNI's 4x400-meter relay team placed sixth with a time of 3:11.55.
On the women's side, junior Rachel Jansen took fourth place in the shot put with a throw of 52-00.50 (15.86m) and sophomore Sarah Harms (Hampton, Iowa/Hampton-Dumont) set an indoor personal-best throw of 46-06.75 (14.19m). Senior Kara Yahn (Clinton, Iowa/Clinton) placed seventh in the 60-meter hurdles, running 8.72 in the finals.
Senior Shayla Houlihan (Sioux City, Iowa/East) ran to a personal-best in the mile run in 5:07.18. Junior Lauren Carruthers (Bettendorf, Iowa/Pleasant Valley) took 10th in the 400-meter dash in 56.23, a UNI season best. Junior Traci Hawley (Ames, Iowa/Ames) clocked in a personal-best time in the 3K (9:56.73), taking 11th. Junior Crystal Hanson (Roland, Iowa/Roland-Story) placed 15th in the high jump with a season-best jump of 5-05.25 (1.66m).
The Panthers host the UNI-Dome Open Friday, February 16.
