Cedar Falls, Iowa - Junior outside hitter Laura Rowen (Hansell, Iowa) had 12 kills and freshman outside hitter Shannon Aschoff (Ankeny, Iowa) added a career-high 10 as the University of Northern Iowa volleyball team posted a 3-0 win over Evansville Friday night at the West Gym. Game scores were 30-13, 30-19 and 30-24.
Trista Humpal (New Hampton, Iowa) had nine kills and five blocks for UNI, while setter Kristin Belzung (Ankeny, Iowa) had 43 assists. Libero Stephanie May (Dubuque, Iowa) led all players with 13 digs.
The Panthers hit .315 as a team (48-14-108), while holding the Purple Aces to .074 hitting (35-26-122). UNI also had 12 blocks to Evansville's one, and had 50 digs to UE's 43.
After falling behind out of the gate 5-2 to start the match, the Panthers rolled to a 30-13 game one win. Rowen had six kills and Aschoff four in the first game alone, as the Panthers went on a 16-1 run at one point to break the game open. UNI hit .333 in the first game, racking up 17 kills, while Evansville hit .031 with just six kills.
With the score tied at five in game two, the Panthers went on a 13-3 run to go up 18-8, with two team blocks and three kills by Aschoff during that stretch. The Aces got as close as five, 23-18, but UNI ended the game on a 7-1 run to win, 30-19.
UNI never trailed in game three. The Panthers held a slight advantage through the first half of the game, leading 15-13 at the midway point. But Amy Sampson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) keyed an 8-1 run - with two kills and two blocks - to give UNI a 23-15 advantage and effectively seal the match. Sampson had five kills overall in game three as the Panthers won, 30-24.
The win improves UNI's record against Evansville to a perfect 26-0 in the all-time series. UNI is now 11-6 overall, 3-1 in the Missouri Valley Conference, while Evansville falls to 9-7, 3-2. The Panthers host Southern Illinois tomorrow night (Sept. 30) at 7:00 p.m.
