UNI Posts Third Straight Sweep, Tops Georgia

Atlanta, Ga. - Four players had double-digit kills as the University of Northern Iowa volleyball team swept Georgia this morning in the second day of the Regency Suites Midtown Invitational. Game scores were 30-19, 30-26 and 30-16.
Amy Sampson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.), Danielle Brazda (Omaha, Neb) and Trista Humpal (New Hampton, Iowa) led the way with 11 kills apiece, while Laura Rowen (Hansell, Iowa) added 10. The Panthers hit .312 as a team, while holding Georgia to .069 hitting.
Brazda had a season-high 11 individual blocks for the Panthers, who recorded a season-best 17 total team blocks in the three games.
The Panthers jumped out to an early 8-2 lead in the first game and never looked back. Georgia was unable to get closer than five points the rest of the way, with the Panthers winning 30-19. UNI's offense was clicking throughout, as it hit .567 (20-3-30) as a team in the first game, with Sampson recording seven kills and Humpal six.
The second game was tight throughout, and tied as late as 24-all. UNI took the lead for good, 25-24, as Brazda and Sampson combined on a block. The Panthers put the game away by scoring the final four points to win 30-26.
UNI had four blocks early in the third game, helping it to open a quick 14-5 lead, and cruise home with a 30-16 win. The Panthers held the Bulldogs to -.094 hitting (6-9-32) in game three, winning 30-16.
The Panthers improved to 5-2 on the year while Georgia fell to 2-4. UNI, which has won each of its first three matches in the tournament by 3-0 scores, wraps up play in Atlanta this afternoon, facing host Georgia Tech at 2:30 p.m.
