
UNI Sweeps North Dakota State

Cedar Falls, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team used a balanced offensive attack to post a 3-0 win Sunday afternoon over North Dakota State. Game scores were 30-24, 30-21 and 30-27.
Junior middle blocker Danielle Brazda (Omaha, Neb.) had a match-high 12 kills, while Ashten Stelken (Manchester, Iowa) and Laura Rowen (Hansell, Iowa) each added 10. Shannon Aschoff (Ankeny, Iowa) and Trista Humpal (New Hampton, Iowa) had eight and seven kills, respectively.
Midway through the first game, UNI scored three straight points to open a 17-13 advantage, forcing an NDSU timeout. The Bison scored the next two points to pull within 17-15, but the Panthers then went on a 7-1 run to open a 24-17 lead. Amy Sampson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) had two kills and Kristin Belzung (Ankeny, Iowa) a pair of service aces during that stretch. UNI eventually won, 30-24, as the Panthers hit .424 (20-6-33), with Sampson, Stelken and Rowen each contributing four kills.
UNI jumped out to an 8-2 lead in game two, but NDSU rallied to pull within 12-11. However, the Panthers scored seven of the next eight points to open a 19-12 margin, and the Bison got no closer than five the rest of the way, with UNI posting a 30-21 win.
North Dakota State used a 5-0 run early in game three to open a 12-5 lead. The Bison held a 17-11 advantage when UNI went on a 9-0 run to pull ahead 20-17. NDSU scored three straight to knot the score at 20, but UNI then rattled off five in a row - three on kills from Brazda - to pull ahead 25-20, and eventually win 30-27.
UNI hit .302 for the match (56-21-116), while NDSU hit .186 (35-17-97). The Panthers recorded 42 digs to the Bison's 30.
With the win, UNI improves to 9-5 on the season, while NDSU falls to 6-9. The Panthers jump back into Missouri Valley Conference play this Friday night, when they travel to face Wichita State. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m. and the match can be heard on KWLO 1330-AM.
