Atlanta, Ga. - Trista Humpal (New Hampton, Iowa) had 11 kills and Danielle Brazda (Omaha, Neb.) added 10 to lead the University of Northern Iowa volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Georgia State this afternoon at the Regency Suites Midtown Invitational. Game scores were 30-26, 30-25 and 30-20 in a match that took just 1 hour, 17 minutes to complete.
Humpal hit .375 (11-2-24) and Brazda hit .353 (10-4-17) to lead the Panthers' offensive attack. They were both effective blocking as well, with Humpal collecting five blocks and Brazda nine in the match. Junior outside hitter Laura Rowen (Hansell, Iowa) added nine kills and a team-high 16 digs for the Panthers.
Trailing 26-25 in the first game, UNI rattled off the final five points to win 30-25. Rowen and Kristin Belzung (Ankeny, Iowa) each had kills during that decisive stretch for the Panthers, while UNI also added a pair of blocks.
In the second game, the Panthers used a 10-3 run to turn an 18-all tie into a 28-21 advantage. UNI had eight of its 15 total team blocks in the second game alone, and held GSU to -.024 hitting (13-14-41) in the 30-25 win.
After falling behind, 7-3, early in the third game, UNI took control. The Panthers went on an 18-5 run to take a 21-12 lead and effectively seal the match, as Georgia State didn't get closer than seven points the rest of the way as UNI eventually won, 30-20.
UNI next plays this evening against Mississippi State at 7:00 p.m. (central time). Play concludes tomorrow for the Panthers as they square off with Georgia at 10:00 a.m. and host Georgia Tech at 2:30 p.m.
