Terre Haute, Ind. - INDIANA STATE HOLDS ON FOR 61-60 WIN OVER UNI
Terre Haute, Ind. - Indiana State withstood a furious rally by the University of Northern Iowa to escape with a 61-60 win Tuesday night at the Hulman Center.
The Sycamores appeared to have the game in hand, holding a 58-49 lead with three minutes to go in regulation. But ISU turned the ball over on three straight possessions, sparking a 6-0 run culminated by an Erik Crawford (Oakdale, Minn.) three-pointer from the corner to pull the Panthers within 58-55 with 1:25 remaining.
After a Gabe Moore jumper made the score 60-55 with less than a minute to go, ISU once again looked like it was in control. However, UNI put on a full court press, forcing two straight ISU turnovers - and two Panthers layups -- pulling the Panthers to within one, 60-59.
David Moss hit one of two free throws to give the Sycamores a 61-59 lead with 20 seconds left. Grant Stout (New Sharon, Iowa) was then fouled with five seconds left, and after hitting his first free throw, he missed the second. UNI maintained possession as the ball went out of bounds off a Sycamore player, but the Panthers lob effort to Stout with 0.7 seconds left was off target and ISU claimed the win.
UNI got off to a solid start to the game, jumping out to a 9-0 lead and holding as much as a 10-point advantage, 21-11, with 11:48 left in the first half. Indiana State went on a 14-4 run to tie the game, 25-all, and the first half ended in a 29-29 deadlock.
Eric Coleman (Maplewood, Minn.) had 18. Stout posted his sixth consecutive double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
UNI falls to 21-6 overall, 11-5 in Missouri Valley Conference play, while Indiana State improves to 11-13, 4-12. The Panthers host 24th-ranked Bucknell this Saturday in the UNI-Dome in BracketBusters presented by eBay. The game will tip off at 11:00 a.m. and be televised live by ESPN2.
