WATERLOO, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa women's tennis team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 7-0 win over the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay at the Black Hawk Tennis Club.
"I thought we played well for only our second match of the spring," UNI head coach Sachin Kirtane said. "Wisconsin-Green Bay was really scrappy and pushed us hard in the No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles. We know we are going to get the other team's best shot because they know we have improved so much."
The Panthers got the afternoon underway by sweeping the three doubles matches, although it was not easy at the No. 1 doubles slot.
Sophomore Meghana Paritala and junior Mariana Muraca battled to a 9-8 (7-5) win over Wisconsin-Green Bay's Heather Harding and Aschley Jurgella in the No. 1 doubles match.
Junior Agnese Pukse and freshman Taynara Moraes scored an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles, while sophomore Carolina Hannes and senior Sara Kendall teamed up for an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles.
The Panthers then scored six straight wins in the singles' competition. The No. 2 singles match between UNI's Moraes and Jenny Tan was the closest battle with Moraes coming out on top in the third set.
UNI will be in action again Sunday against Wisconsin-Milwaukee at Noon at the Black Hawk Tennis Club in Waterloo.
