Cedar Falls, Iowa - Adam Viet (Ackley, Iowa) came off the bench to score a career-high 24 points and lead the University of Northern Iowa men's basketball team to an 85-53 win over UMKC Saturday night at the McLeod Center.
Viet did his damage from behind the arc, making 7-of-8 three-pointers on the night, and coming within one of the UNI school record for treys in a game (Cam Johnson, 8 vs. Drake, 1993-94). He also hit three of four free throws, and added one assist and one steal in 23 minutes. The 6-3 junior sharpshooter has now made 13 three-pointers in his career against UMKC, making one as a freshman in 2004-05 and five last year.
UNI led 15-13 with less than nine minutes remaining in the first half when Viet got going. Over the next six minutes, he hit four treys, keying a 20-4 run that put the Panthers up 35-17, and effectively putting the game away. The Panthers led 37-21 at halftime, and Viet nailed three more trifectas in the second half, helping UNI build its lead to as many as 37 in the second half as the Panthers cruised to the win.
In all, the Panthers made a season-high 13 treys against UMKC's zone defense. UNI shot a season-best 58 percent from the field - including 65 percent in the second half - and scored a season-best 85 points. The Panthers also had a dominant effort on the boards, snaring 42 rebounds to UMKC's 28.
Eric Coleman (Maplewood, Minn.) had his fourth straight double-double, scoring 15 points and grabbing 13 rebounds, in just 19 minutes of action. Grant Stout (New Sharon, Iowa) had 13 points and eight boards, while Jordan Eglseder (Bellevue, Iowa) had seven points and six rebounds in 14 minutes off the bench. Point guard Brooks McKowen (Fairbank, Iowa) tied his season high with nine assists.
UMKC's Quinton Day led his team with 21 points, connecting on 8-of-12 field goals, including 5-of-7 on three-pointers.
UNI has now won six straight games and improved to 8-1 on the season, while UMKC fell to 3-7. The Panthers next game is a week from tonight (Dec. 16) when they travel to face Loyola-Chicago. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
