LEWISBURG, Pa. - Senior guard Brooks McKowen keeps hitting big shots in the second half and the University of Northern Iowa keeps putting wins on the board.
The Panthers scored a 57-48 victory Saturday at Bucknell's Sojka Pavilion to improve to 6-1 on the season.
McKowen (Fairbank, Iowa) drilled three second-half three-pointers to propel the Panthers to the triumph. McKowen's first three-pointer of the second half gave UNI a 42-40 lead with 7:56 left in the game after Bucknell had rallied from a 38-31 deficit.
McKowen hit his second trifecta at the 5:34 mark to give UNI a three-point advantage, 45-42. After his second three, Bucknell head coach Pat Flannery received a technical foul at the 4:35 mark and McKowen then went to the line and made both free throws. Jared Josten followed with a pair of free throws to give UNI a 49-42 lead.
After the Bison trimmed the Panther lead to three points at 49-46, McKowen came to the rescue again as he buried a three from the left corner as the shot clock expired with 2:44 left in the game.
"I don't know how I made that shot in the corner, but it went down and we got the win," McKowen said.
McKowen was the Panthers' leading scorer with 17 points but his six assists and ball-handling also contributed to the victory. UNI committed seven first-half turnovers but only turned the ball over once in the second half.
Eric Coleman notched a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Twelve of Coleman's 14 points came in the first half, when he drained 6-of-7 shots from the field. Grant Stout also chipped with 13 points and six boards.
Bucknell's effort was led by Abe Badmus' 11 points and Chris McNaughton's 10 points and nine rebounds. Bucknell dropped to 2-5 on the year.
The Panthers will be back in action on Tuesday as they take on the Iowa Hawkeyes at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City.
