The University of Northern Iowa had a pair of student-athletes honored in the final week of the Gateway Football Conference season as defensive and special teams players of the week. Senior linebacker Dave Schratz earned defensive honors, while senior placekicker Brian Wingert tallied special teams accolades.
Schratz (Garfield, N.J.) intercepted the first pass of his career and led the Panthers with nine tackles in a 38-27 victory over No. 6-ranked Illinois State. Schratz's interception came on the first play of the second quarter and the Panthers turned the pick into six points on the following play.
Wingert (Cedar Falls, Iowa) became UNI's all-time field goal leader when he drilled a 21-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to give the Panthers a 38-27 lead over No. 6-ranked Illinois State. Wingert converted all five extra points and knocked three kickoffs into end zone for touchbacks. Wingert scored eight total points in the victory.
UNI completed its season with an overall record of 7-4 and 5-2 in the Gateway conference. The Panthers tied for second-place in the league but did not received an at-large bid into the NCAA Division I Football Championship tournament.
