Seattle, Wash. - Sophomore Travis Brown (Richfield, Minn.) tied his career high with 16 points and grabbed a career-high seven rebounds to lead the University of Northern Iowa to an 83-58 win over Pepperdine Monday night at the Basketball Travelers Classic.
Brown hit 6-of-10 shots from the field, including 2-of-3 from three point range, to pace the Panthers in scoring. Senior point guard Brooks McKowen (Fairbank, Iowa) had 11 points, eight assists and five rebounds.
Pepperdine scored the first four points of the game, but it was all UNI from there on out. The Panthers went on a 29-7 run over the next 12 minutes to open a 29-9 advantage and were never threatened the rest of the way. UNI held a 45-25 lead at halftime, and built its lead to as many as 35 points late in the game.
The Panthers combined red-hot shooting and a commanding margin on the boards to roll to the victory. UNI hit 58 percent of its field goals for the game (30-of-52), including 64 percent in the second half (16-of-25). The Panthers were also deadly from three-point range, connecting on 9-of-12 from downtown. UNI owned a whopping 41-18 edge in rebounding.
Nine players scored for UNI, and it was a balanced scoring attack, as four Panthers - Eric Coleman (Maplewood, Minn.), Stephen Jones (Bethalto, Ill.), Kwadzo Ahelegbe (Oakdale, Minn.) and Adam Koch (Ashwaubenon, Wis.) - each had nine points, while Jordan Eglseder (Bellevue, Iowa) had eight. Koch and Eglseder tied for team-high honors in rebounding with seven apiece. Jones hit all three of his three-point attempts, while Jared Josten (Webster City, Iowa) connected on both of his.
UNI concludes play in the Basketball Travelers Classic tomorrow (Nov. 14) at Bank of America Arena when it faces 16th ranked Washington. Tipoff is 7:30 p.m. (Pacific).
