Wichita, Kan. - Grant Stout (New Sharon, Iowa) scored a season-high 22 points and added 10 rebounds to help lead the University of Northern Iowa men's basketball team to a 75-61 win over Wichita State Thursday night at Charles Koch arena.
Stout posted his 11th career double-double, hitting 5-of-10 shots from the field, 3-of-4 from three point range, and 9-of-10 from the free throw line. He was joined in double figure scoring by senior guard Erik Crawford (Oakdale, Minn.) with 10.
UNI made its final 10 field goals to end the game, not missing a shot during the last 13:37 of the game, and outscored the Shockers 37-21 over that span. A Jacobson three-pointer started the run, giving the Panthers a 42-40 advantage, and after WSU tied the score, an Eric Coleman (Maplewood, Minn.) layup gave UNI the lead for good, 44-42. The Panthers shot a sizzling 65 percent in the second half (13-for-20).
Both teams struggled shooting the ball in the first half, as UNI hit just 10-of-29 (34.5 percent) and WSU connected on just 10-of-28 (35.7 percent). The Shockers held a 22-17 lead with less than three minutes to go before halftime, but John Little (Peoria, Ill.) and Jacobson each had two three-pointers in the final three minutes to send the Panthers into the locker room with a 29-26 lead. Jacobson's last three came from 30 feet as the horn sounded.
UNI shot 47 percent from the field for the game, and 41 percent of its three-pointers (9-of-22). In addition to Stout's accuracy from behind the arc, Jacobson was 4-for-8 from three-point range and Little was 2-of-4.
Wichita State hit just 41 percent of its field goals and 31 percent from three-point range. UNI won the battle of rebounding, 34-29.
With the win, UNI improves to 13-2 overall, 3-1 in the Missouri Valley Conference. Wichita State falls to 11-4 overall, 2-2 in league play. The Panthers travel to face Missouri State this Saturday night (Jan. 7) in Springfield, Mo., with tipoff set for 7:05 p.m.
