Peoria, Ill. - Senior guard Ben Jacobson (Sioux City, Iowa) had a season-high 23 points, but it was not enough as Bradley defeated the University of Northern Iowa, 68-60 in overtime, in the Missouri Valley Conference opener for both schools.
Jacobson was 8-of-20 from the field and 4-of-9 from three-point range on the evening. He was joined in double-figure scoring by Eric Coleman (12 points, nine rebounds) and Grant Stout (10 points, nine boards).
Stout hit two free throws to give UNI the lead, 52-50, with just over a minute remaining in regulation. Bradley's Marcellus Sommerville then hit an off-balance 15-foot jumper in the lane with 40 seconds left that tied the game. UNI ran the clock down, looking to win the game on the final shot, but a pass intended for Stout was knocked away. Bradley called timeout with three seconds left, but was unable to get shot off, and the game went to overtime.
With Bradley holding a 59-56 lead in the extra session, Sommerville once again hit a key shot. He knocked down a well-guarded three-pointer from the top of the key with 1:16 left, extending BU's lead to 62-56, and the Braves hit free throws down the stretch to seal the win. Bradley was a perfect 10-for-10 from the line in overtime.
UNI hit just 33.9 percent of its field goals for the game, while Bradley connected on 46.4 of its attempts. The Panthers made nine three-pointers to the Braves' three.
With the win, Bradley improves to 7-2, 1-0 in the Missouri Valley Conference. UNI had its seven-game winning streak snapped, falling to 10-2 overall, 0-1 in MVC play. The Panthers next game is this Saturday (Dec. 31), when they host Evansville at 4:05 p.m. in the UNI-Dome.
