Cedar Falls, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team posted a 3-0 win over Indiana State tonight at the West Gym. Game scores were 30-26, 30-26 and 30-28. Three UNI players reached double figures in kills, led by freshman Ashten Stelken (Manchester, Iowa) with 12. Danielle Brazda (Omaha, Neb.) and Trista Humpal (New Hampton, Iowa) each added 10 kills for the Panthers.
The win, UNI's fourth straight and sixth in its last seven matches, improved the team's record to 16-8 overall, 10-3 in the Missouri Valley Conference. Indiana State fell to 0-25 on the season, 0-14 in the Valley.
The Panthers went on an 8-1 run early in the first game to turn a 10-7 deficit into a 15-11 advantage. ISU never got closer than three points the rest of the way, as UNI posted a 30-26 win. Humpal had four kills to lead the Panthers' offense.
UNI opened a 19-14 lead in the second game, but Indiana State rattled off seven straight points to take a 21-19 advantage and force a Panthers timeout. UNI responded, winning the next three points - two on kills by Brazda - and took the lead for good at 23-22, eventually winning the game, 30-26.
Neither team led by more than three points at any time in a tightly-fought third game. After Indiana State took a 23-21 lead, UNI rattled off four straight points to take a 25-23 edge. UNI had a 27-25 lead when ISU scored three straight points, the last two on blocks, to take a 28-27 lead. After a Panthers' timeout, Stelken and Stephanie Germann (LeMars, Iowa) had consecutive kills to give UNI a 29-28 lead, and the Panthers claimed the match on an Indiana State error. Both team's offenses were clicking throughout the game, as UNI hit .500 (20-4-32) in the third game, while Indiana State hit .357 (20-5-42). Stelken and Sampson each had five kills in the third game for UNI.
UNI plays Illinois State tomorrow night (Nov. 5) in the West Gym at 7:00 p.m.
