Cedar Falls, Iowa - Laura Rowen (Hansell, Iowa) had 15 kills and Stephanie Germann (LeMars, Iowa) had 14, but it was not enough as Creighton posted a 3-2 win over the University of Northern Iowa in volleyball action Friday night at the West Gym. Game scores were 30-18, 30-22, 23-30, 27-30 and 16-14 in favor of the Bluejays.
Freshman Ashten Stelken (Manchester, Iowa) also reached double figures in kills with 12. Rowen posted her 14th double-double of the season, adding 12 digs on the night. Creighton's Leah Ratzlaff led all players with 22 kills
After a Rowen kill, UNI held a 12-10 lead in game five, but Creighton scored back-to-back points to pull even. Another Rowen put-away gave the Panthers a 13-12 lead, but CU again scored two in a row to pull to a 14-13 lead. Rowen fought off match point with yet another kill, but back-to-back Bluejay kills by Amanda Cvejdlik and Kelly Goc gave CU a 16-14 game win, and the match victory.
Creighton took control of the first game with an 8-0 run to take a 12-5 lead, and UNI would get no closer than five points the rest of the way. The Bluejays hit .294 (16-6-34) with eight blocks in the first game, while the Panthers hit -.083 (9-12-36).
The Bluejays jumped out quickly again in the second game, posting leads of 9-3, 15-6 and 20-10. UNI pulled within 22-15, but Creighton went on a 7-1 run to open a 29-16 lead. The Panthers responded with six straight points, forcing a Bluejay timeout, before a Kelly Goc kill gave CU the 30-22 win and a 2-0 lead.
After hitting negative through the first two games, UNI's offense started to click in the third game. The Panther jumped to an early 10-4 lead and never let the Bluejays closer than within five points the rest of the way, en route to a 30-23 win. Stelken had seven kills and Germann five in the third game alone, and the Panthers hit .353 (18-6-34) as a team.
With the score tied a 17-all in the fourth game, UNI went on a 5-1 run to open a 22-18 lead. Creighton battled back, pulling within 28-26, but UNI scored two of the final three points, with the game-winner coming on a cross court blast by Rowen, to claim a 30-27 victory and force the fifth and deciding game.
Creighton improves to 15-13 overall, 9-8 in the Missouri Valley Conference, while UNI falls to 18-11, 11-6 in Valley play. The Panthers will be the fourth seed in next week's State Farm Missouri Valley Conference championship, and will play either Creighton or Bradley in the first round at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 25.
