Wichita State Defeats UNI

Wichita, Kan. - Freshman outside hitter Amy Sampson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) had a match-high 13 kills, but it was not enough as 23rd-ranked Wichita State posted a 3-0 win over the University of Northern Iowa volleyball team Friday night.
Stephanie Germann (LeMars, Iowa) added nine kills, Laura Rowen (Hansell, Iowa) had eight and Danielle Brazda (Omaha, Neb.) posted seven for the Panthers.
Wichita State controlled the first game from the outset, jumping to leads of 9-3, 15-4 and 17-5. The Shockers hit .500 (20-3-34) in the first game, winning 30-16.
The second game was close throughout. UNI led 20-17, before WSU rallied to take a 23-22 lead. The Shockers held a 28-26 advantage, but a Rowen kill and a Shocker hitting error saw UNI even the match at 28-all. Wichita State responded, getting back-to-back kills to win the second game, 30-28. UNI hit .333 (20-6-42) in the second game.
The Shockers jumped out to a 17-11 lead in game three, before UNI rallied. The Panthers pulled within 22-19, but WSU went on an 8-2 run to end the game, winning 30-21 and claiming the match.
UNI hit .219 as a team (44-19-114), but Wichita State hit an impressive .410 (54-11-105) to earn the victory. That was the highest hitting percentage a UNI opponent has posted all season.
With the win, Wichita State improves to 24-2 overall, 15-0 in the Missouri Valley Conference. UNI falls to 17-9 overall, 11-4 in the Valley. The Panthers face Missouri State tomorrow night in Springfield, Mo.
