Illinois State Sweeps UNI

Normal, Ill. - Illinois State's Kari Staehlin had a match-high 11 kills and hit .667 (11-1-15) to lead ISU to a 3-0 win over the University of Northern Iowa volleyball team at Redbird Arena. Game scores were 30-19, 30-26 and 30-15.
Illinois State jumped out to a quick 9-2 lead in the first game and was able to cruise to a 30-19 win. The Redbirds hit .370 (14-4-27), including six kills by Staehlin, while the Panthers hit -.026 (11-12-38). Stephanie May (Dubuque, Iowa) had four kills in the game for the Panthers.
The Redbirds came from behind late to win the second game. UNI held a 25-22 lead when Illinois State called its second and final timeout. ISU then ended the game on an 8-1 run to win, 30-26. The Panthers had eight team blocks in the second game alone.
UNI jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the third game, but ISU went on an 8-0 run to take a 12-8 advantage. The rest of the game was controlled by the Redbirds, as they hit .323 (13-3-31) to win, 30-15.
For the match, Illinois State hit .209 as a team (43-20-110), while UNI suffered its lowest hitting percentage of the season at -.046 (25-30-108). The Panthers, who rank third in the nation in blocking averaging 3.70 bpg, had 12 total team blocks in the match.
With the win, Illinois State improves to 9-6 overall and 5-2 in the Missouri Valley Conference, while UNI falls to 10-7, 4-2 in MVC play. The Panthers travel to face Indiana State tomorrow night (Oct. 8) in Terre Haute, Ind.
