UNI Tops Evansville, 3-1

Evansville, Ind. - Sophomore middle blocker Danielle Brazda (Omaha, Neb.) tied her season high with 16 kills and added eight blocks, to lead the University of Northern Iowa volleyball team to a 3-1 win over Evansville Friday night. Game scores were 30-26, 30-27, 27-30 and 30-27.
Stephanie Germann (LeMars, Iowa) had 13 kills, while Laura Rowen (Hansell, Iowa) posted 12 and Ashten Stelken (Manchester, Iowa) added 10. Junior libero Stephanie May (Dubuque, Iowa) recorded a career-high 26 digs for the Panthers.
With the first game tied at 24-all, UNI benefited from three straight Evansville errors to take a 27-24 lead. Evansville scored two of the next three points to pull within 28-26, but Amy Sampson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) had a kill and Trista Humpal (New Hampton, Iowa) a service ace on game point to give UNI the win, 30-26.
Evansville held a 20-17 in game two, before UNI scored five of the next six points to take the lead for good, 22-21. The Purple Aces stayed close the rest of the way, and were within one as late as 28-27, before a Rowen kill and a UNI block by Germann and Stelken gave the Panthers the 30-27 win.
After Evansville claimed game three, 30-27, UNI came from behind to win the fourth game. The Purple Aces jumped to leads of 4-0, 6-2 and 14-9, before the Panthers rallied. UNI went on an 8-3 run to tie the score at 17-all. With the score 20-20, UNI went on a 4-1 run to take a 24-21 lead, and would not trail again. UNI claimed a 30-27 win in the fourth game and the match, 3-1.
With the win, UNI improves to 13-8 overall, 7-3 in the Missouri Valley Conference, while Evansville falls to 7-17 overall, 2-8 in the MVC. UNI travels to face Southern Illinois tomorrow night (Oct. 22) in Carbondale, Ill.
