Cedar Falls, Iowa - Wichita State posted a hard-fought 3-1 win over the University of Northern Iowa volleyball team Saturday night at the West Gymnasium. Game scores were 30-28, 28-30, 30-24 and 32-30 in favor of the Shockers.
UNI was led offensively by Laura Rowen (Hansell, Iowa) and Amy Sampson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.), who each had 13 kills. Also reaching double-digits in kills for the Panthers were Danielle Brazda (Omaha, Neb.) and Ashten Stelken (Manchester, Iowa) with 10 each. Rowen and Stephanie May (Dubuque, Iowa) each had 14 digs for UNI.
On the serve of Patricia Dietz (Tripoli, Iowa), UNI went on a 7-0 run in the first game to open a 17-13 lead. Wichita State fought back to tie the match at 19-all, and neither team held more than a one-point advantage until WSU took a 27-24 lead. UNI fought back to even the match at 28-all, before the Shockers scored the final two points to pull out a 30-28 win.
Much like the first game, the second game was close throughout, with the Panthers holding a slight lead much of the way. WSU pulled even as late as 26-all, but a Shocker hitting error and consecutive blocks by UNI gave the Panthers a 29-26 edge. Wichita State scored two straight points to pull within 29-28, but after UNI's second timeout, Rowen blasted a cross court kill to give the Panthers a 30-28 win and even the match at one game apiece.
UNI held a slight lead for the first half of the third game, before Wichita State evened the score at 17-all. Rowen recorded back-to-back kills to give UNI a 22-20 advantage, but WSU responded by running off four straight points to take the lead for good. The Shockers recorded three service aces down the stretch to take the third game, 30-24.
Wichita State took leads of 7-3 and 13-7 and 17-11 in the fourth game, but UNI fought back. With the Shockers holding a 20-17 advantage, UNI went on an 8-1 run to take a 25-21 lead. UNI had a pair of kills from Stephanie Germann (LeMars, Iowa) and four blocks during that stretch. Wichita State responded with a 6-1 run of its own to take a 27-26 lead. Wichita State had match point at 29-28, and UNI had game point at 30-29, but the Shockers scored the final three points to take a 32-30 win in game four and claim the match.
With the victory, Wichita State improves to 18-2 overall, 9-0 in the Missouri Valley Conference, while UNI falls to 12-8, 6-3 in MVC play. The Panthers next match is Friday, Oct. 21 at Evansville.
