Panthers Fall to Iowa, Drake in Final Fall Games

Cedar Falls, IA- The University of Northern Iowa softball team was defeated in both of its final two games of the fall season. The Panthers were handed a 4-0 defeat from Iowa, and dropped a 6-4 decision to Drake.
The day began with a 4-0 loss to Iowa. The teams traded scoreless frames for four innings, but the Hawkeyes broke open the game with a grand slam in the fifth. The Panther offense was shut out and held to just three hits. Freshman Jamie Kelling led the offense, going 1-3 with a double. Senior Uju Ibekwe threw six innings, giving up four runs on six hits for the loss.
Drake would provide the final challenge of the year for the Panthers. The Bulldogs earned an early lead with runs in the second and third frames, but UNI pulled within one in the bottom of the third when Kelling tripled to center and sophomore Nikki Ferden drove her in. The Panthers tied it up in the fourth with an RBI single from Stephanie Aguero that scored Ferden. Drake scored one in the sixth and three in the seventh to put the score at 6-2. UNI rallied in the seventh with runs from Aguero and Tracy Davis, but couldn't overcome the Bulldog lead. The Panther offense faired considerably better in the nightcap than in the opener, tallying 10 hits, but stranding 11 base runners in the loss. Ferden turned in the top offensive performance, going 2-4 with an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base. Amanda Hess took the loss after throwing 5.2 innings and giving up three runs. Aguero threw the final 1.1 innings and gave up three runs on five hits.
