Panthers Pounce on Iowa State

Cedar Falls, Iowa - Three University of Northern Iowa players scored more than 20 points, each topping their career highs, as the Panthers defeated Iowa State, 99-82, at the UNI-Dome Wednesday night.
Junior Erik Crawford (Oakdale, Minn.) had a career-high 28 points, fellow junior Eric Coleman (Maplewood, Minn.) recorded career bests with 24 points and 10 rebounds to lead UNI to the victory over its intrastate rival.
The Panthers, who tied a UNI-Dome record by making 12 three-pointers on the night, connected on 60.3 percent of their field goals for the evening (35-for-58), and made 54.5 percent of their threes (12-of-22). The trio of Crawford, Jacobson and Coleman combined to make 31-of-46 field goal attempts (.674), and Crawford and Jacobson each made five treys on the night.
UNI never trailed in the game, jumping out to a 20-5 lead in the first five minutes of the contest. Jacobson and Crawford each had a pair of three-pointers during that five-minute run. The Cyclones went on a 6-0 run to pull within seven, 20-13, but would get no closer. The Panthers hit 10-of-16 threes in the first half - four each by Crawford and Jacobson - to open a 44-27 halftime advantage. The Panthers widened their lead to as much as 33 points in the second half, 86-53, with 7:02 left in the game.
Panthers sophomore point guard Brooks McKowen (Fairbank, Iowa) had a career-high 11 assists and three turnovers, and as a team UNI had 25 assists and just 10 turnovers. Iowa State had four assists and 12 turnovers on the night. Grant Stout (New Sharon, Iowa) had his third straight game in double-figure scoring, as the 6-8 sophomore had 10 points.
Iowa State was led by Jared Homan who had 23 points.
With the win, UNI improves to 2-1 on the season, while Iowa State falls to 3-1. The Panthers next game is this Saturday (Dec. 4) when they travel to Chicago, Ill., to face the Loyola Ramblers. Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
