
UNI Defeats Iowa, 3-1

Cedar Falls, Iowa - Rachael Tink (Waterloo, Iowa) tied her season high with 21 kills, and Shari Vermeer (Sioux Center, Iowa) added 19, to help lead the University of Northern Iowa volleyball team to a 3-1 win over Iowa Tuesday night. Game scores were 30-21, 23-30, 30-27 and 30-26.
A season-high crowd of 1,876 at the West Gym saw UNI defeat Iowa for the 10th straight time, and post its 26th consecutive win over a school from the state of Iowa. Panthers head coach Bobbi Petersen improved to 15-0 lifetime against Iowa colleges.
Both Tink and Vermeer hit better than .300 for match, at .302 (21-8-43) and .333 (19-7-36) respectively. Freshman middle blocker Danielle Brazda (Omaha, Neb.) led UNI in hitting percentage at .526 (11-1-19). The Panthers hit .273 as a team (71-29-154), including a scorching .553 (23-2-38) in game four.
With the match even at one game apiece, Iowa came out hot in the third game, building an early 13-9 advantage. But UNI went on an 8-3 run to take the lead for good, 17-16, with Tink and Vermeer each contributing a pair of kills during that stretch. After Iowa pulled within 26-24, UNI called a timeout, and Iowa committed a service error coming out of it. The Panthers were able to trade points the rest of the way, with Vermeer's kill sealing the game, 30-27.
The fourth game saw each team clicking on offense most of the way. While UNI hit .553 for the game with just two hitting errors, Iowa was nearly as sharp, hitting .356 (19-3-45) with just three errors. The Panthers, who trailed 22-19, rallied with a 5-0 run to take a 24-22 lead, and were able to hold the Hawkeyes at bay the rest of the game. Laura Rowen (Hansell, Iowa) had three of her 10 kills down the stretch to help UNI clinch the match.
Stephanie May (Dubuque, Iowa) tied her career high with 20 digs, and Tink and Erin Hirsch (Waterloo, Iowa) each chipped in with 11. Hirsch, who set a career high with 64 assists two days ago against Southwest Missouri State, had 62 assists tonight.
With the win, UNI improves to 9-6 overall, while Iowa falls to 9-7. UNI hits the road for its next match, this Friday night (Oct. 8) at Southern Illinois. First serve from Carbondale, Ill., is set for 7:00 p.m.
