Like many outstanding collegiate athletes, former Panther Mark Onstott’s career was only just beginning during his tenure as a student-athlete at UNI.

After qualifying for the NCAA Championships in 1974 Onstott returned to the pool to earn All-America honors at the 1975 NCAA Championships. Onstott was named team captain and also earned the James Witham Award for outstanding swimmer of the year.

After wrapping up his career as an athlete, Onstott joined the coaching ranks, again becoming one of the top in the nation. He began his coaching career as an assistant girls and boys swimming coach at Kennedy High School in Cedar Rapids. After Kennedy, Onstott coached at Cy-Fair High School in Cypress, Texas and currently is the head boys swimming coach at New Trier High School in Illinois.

Onstott has recorded over 330 dual victories as a swimming coach including six state championships, two regional championships, 15 district or sectional championships, 21 conference championships and coached over 125 All-American swimmers. In 2005, Onstott earned two National Coach of the Year honors and has been named State Coach of the Year multiple times in Iowa, Texas and Illinois.

In addition to his coaching contributions, Onstott has conducted to numerous clinics and serves as a convention speaker as well. Onstott has earned publication in the Athletic Journal and NISCA Journal as well as contributing to the NISCA Coaches Education Manual.
