Dr. Jack Wilkinson began his career as a UNI Professor of Mathematics in 1962, but as a student here, he played baseball from 1948-52, earning three letters. He led the team his junior year with a batting average of .343. He graduated in 1952, earned his master's from UNI in 1958 and his doctorate from Iowa State in 1970.

Upon graduation, he coached boys basketball and baseball at Aplington (Iowa) High School from 1953-56. Dr. Wilkinson served as UNI's Athletics NCAA Faculty Representative from 1987-2002. Throughout his professional career, he had led and participated in countless research projects in the discipline of mathematics and has been a consultant in numerous other endeavors. He became Director of the DoDEA/UNI Project for High School Mathematics Teachers in 1993. He served as the Chair of the UNI Faculty Research Committee beginning in 1994, and has written mathematics textbook materials for Ginn/Xerox publishers and the American Book Company, among many other professional contributions.

Dr. Wilkinson received the 2001 Ross A. Nielsen Service Award, the 1998 Iowa Council of Teachers of Mathematics Lifetime Achievement Award, the 1998 UNI Association of Educational Office Professionals Educator/Administrator of the Year, the 1991 Regents Distinguished Professor, the 1990 UNI Professor of the Year, the 1987 UNI Alumni Service Award, and the 1978 YMCA Distinguished Service Award.
