Brent Geringer was a dominating force in the field events for the Panther men's track team from 1976-79.
He came to UNI after a year at Rice University in Houston, where he set a freshman school record in the shot put with a throw of more than 55 feet.
Before college, he won three state championships in the shot put from 1972-74 as a prep standout at Mount Ayr (Iowa) High School.
While attending UNI, Geringer set records in indoor as well as outdoor track in both the shot put and the discus. At the time of his induction in 2005, his throw of 60-3ÂĽ in 1979 remained the UNI indoor conference meet record as well as the UNI indoor school record, becoming the first Iowa collegian ever to throw the shot more than 60 feet.
Geringer excelled outdoors as well. He is fourth on the all-time list of great performances for UNI in the shot put (57-6ÂĽ), and held the school record in the discus (199-6) for more than 25 years.
Geringer was a five-time Division II All-American in the shot and discus. He was a two-time Division II national champion in the discus in 1978 and 1979. He was the first UNI track athlete to win Division I All-American honors. He also was the first UNI track athlete to qualify for the Olympic trials.Â
Geringer graduated from UNI in 1980 with a degree in education. He later went on to Cleveland Chiropractic College in Kansas City, Mo., graduating Summa Cum Laude in 1988.
