A 1973 graduate of Odebolt-Arthur High School in Odebolt, Iowa, Barbara Wahlstrom Carter enjoyed great success as a three-sport athlete at the University of Northern Iowa.
At Odebolt, she was a four-year participant in track, basketball and cross country and was a 1971 state track qualifier in two events. At UNI, she started at forward on the field hockey team from 1974-77, leading the Panthers in scoring each year. She twice was selected to the Iowa College Team I, once to the Midwest Hockey Association Team I and once to Team II, and was a United States Field Hockey Association Intercollegiate Committee Representative. She was also selected to play in the national USFHA Tournament in Harrisonburg, Va., in 1975 and again in Philadelphia, Pa., in 1976. During her career, the UNI field hockey team compiled a record of 26-7-4.
Carter also spent four years playing second base for the UNI softball team, helping the Panthers gain a berth in the College World Series three times, including bringing home a runner-up finish in 1975 and a national championship in 1977. A heavy hitter, she led the championship team with a .375 batting average.
As a varsity basketball player from 1973-1977, she helped guide the Panthers to a 42-27 record. She played on the UNI State Tournament team each year, and was named co-captain as a junior and senior.
In addition to her athletic achievements, Carter also served as President of Physical Education Major Club in 1977 and received the Purple & Gold Award the same year. Since graduating from UNI in 1977, Carter was a teacher and coach at West Burlington (Iowa) High School. She coached track, softball, and basketball. She was named Hawkeyeland Coach of the Year in softball in 1984, and Superconference Coach of the Year in girls basketball and softball in 1996.
