University of Northern Iowa Athletics
The UNI-Dome, located on the campus of the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, has been a cornerstone of Panther athletics and community events since its opening in February 1976. With a new seating capacity of approximately 12,500 for football, the Dome has hosted a wide array of events, including college football games, high school state championships, concerts, expos, and university commencements. As the home of UNI Panthers football, the UNI-Dome provides a unique indoor venue that shields fans and players from the elements, maintaining a consistent 72-degree environment year-round.
UNI football has thrived inside the Dome, compiling an outstanding all-time record of 233–68–1. The Panthers have enjoyed a formidable home-field advantage, helping to establish the Dome as one of the toughest places to play in the FCS. The venue’s all-time attendance record was set on October 17, 2009, when 17,190 fans packed the stands to watch UNI face Southern Illinois in a pivotal Missouri Valley Football Conference matchup.
Beyond football, the UNI-Dome is a true multi-purpose facility. Beneath the turf lies a full indoor track, which allows the building to transform into a competition space for collegiate and high school track and field meets. The Dome also hosts major wrestling tournaments, including regional and state-level events, providing a spacious and climate-controlled environment ideal for large-scale competitions. Additionally, it serves as a venue for a variety of community events, trade shows, and exhibitions throughout the year.
In preparation for the 2025 football season and the Dome's 50th anniversary in 2026, the university launched a major renovation project to modernize the facility and elevate the fan experience. Phase one of the renovation, completed in summer 2024, included the installation of a new Teflon-coated fiberglass roof and the addition of the Van G. Miller Family Charitable Foundation Football Team Meeting Room. Phase two, which began in April 2025, focuses on comprehensive upgrades to seating, accessibility, and premium amenities. Fans can expect wider chair-back seats, expanded premium seating options, and an enhanced suite level. Accessibility improvements include wider aisles, additional handrails, and a new elevator on the west side of the Dome—ensuring a safer and more inclusive experience for all attendees.
The renovation has received strong financial support, with over $9 million of the $16 million needed for phase two already secured through donations and university investment. Major contributions include a $1 million gift from the Black Hawk County Gaming Association and a $100,000 donation from the Pump family, proud UNI alumni committed to the future of Panther Athletics. The full renovation is expected to be completed by fall 2026, aligning with the Dome’s golden anniversary.
As it undergoes this exciting transformation, the UNI-Dome remains a symbol of Panther pride and a vital hub for athletic excellence and community engagement. The ongoing upgrades ensure that it will continue to serve as one of the region’s top venues for sports and special events for decades to come.
