In the spring of 1998, the University of Northern Iowa completed construction of its new multipurpose student and athletic facility - the Wellness & Recreation Center. The $14 million facility serves as the home of the UNI swimming and diving team.
The Center’s pool features eight 25-yard lanes, each equipped with a Colorado Timing Systems electronic timing system. This system connects to a large electronic scoreboard, allowing spectators to follow the action in real time. A closed gutter filtration system surrounds the pool, significantly reducing water turbulence and enhancing swimmer performance.
For diving, the facility includes two one-meter boards on the pool deck and two three-meter boards mounted on a platform at the north end. The diving well is 13 feet deep.
Spectator seating includes elevated permanent bleachers with capacity for 300. The seating area offers an excellent, close-up view of the competition. During meets, a hospitality room is also available for fans and parents.
In addition to varsity athletics, the pool is open to the UNI community for recreational activities such as intramurals, swimming lessons, open swim sessions, water aerobics, and lifeguard certification classes.
The rest of the Wellness & Recreation Center offers a wide range of amenities, including basketball, volleyball, and racquetball courts; dance and exercise studios; two weight rooms; and an indoor track—all open daily to the UNI community.
