9/11/2018 9:06:00 AM | Wrestling
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Former UNI wrestling coach Chuck Patten will be honored with the Lifetime Service Award at the Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Convention next month.
Steve Knipp and Wyatt Schultz, who also have Panther ties, will be recognized with Patten when the National Wrestling Hall Of Fame Iowa Chapter honors the individuals at the Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Convention Oct. 27 at a noon luncheon at the Airport Holiday Inn in Des Moines, Iowa.
Patten took the helm of the Panther team in 1965, guiding UNI to 17 consecutive winning seasons and a pair of Division II titles in 1975 and 1978. His teams took second at the Division II championships in 1970, 1972, 1974 and 1980.
UNI yielded 58 Division I or II All-Americans and 16 champions under Patten.
Patten was honored as the Division II Coach of the Year twice and named Midwest Regional Coach of the Year after his 1982 squad won the regional championship. In the 14 years his teams participated in the North Central Conference tournament, his wrestlers brought back the first place trophy 10 times and the runner-up award four times. In the Mid-Continent Conference, the Panthers won five consecutive titles. He retired from coaching in 1982.
Patten is a 1956 graduate of Waterloo East High School where he wrestled under Dave Natvig. He posted a 28-5-2 dual meet record in three years at State College of Iowa, including a 10-0-2 mark as a junior. He graduated from SCI in 1961 and received his master's from Oregon a year later. He began his coaching career at Exeter (California) High School, guiding that team to the state title in only its second year of competition. He then moved to Reesport, Oregon, for the 1963-64 season and again won the state title, with three state champions.
Knipp has been a staple for the Panthers at home events running the scoreboard at UNI wrestling duals. He will be recognized with a Lifetime Service Award for his work as the former head wrestling coach at Waterloo East.
A member of the media who has covered UNI wrestling extensively over the years will be honored. Wyatt Schultz from The Predicament earned the Dan McCool Media Award.
