CEDAR FALLS, Iowa—The University of Northern Iowa women's soccer team will open the 2018 season this weekend with games against Viterbo and South Dakota.
The Viterbo V-Hawks come to town on Thursday, August 16, for a 6 p.m. match at the Cedar Valley Soccer Complex. Last season against the V-Hawks, the Panthers posted a 3-0 victory over Viterbo.
The South Dakota Coyotes visit on Sunday, August 19 for a matinee game, starting at 1 p.m. The Panthers posted a 2-0 on the road last season against the Coyotes.
"We are excited to get rolling with the opening games," commented head coach Bruce Erickson. "We have been working extremely hard and have improved in each exhibition. It will be great to be back home this week."
MVC Preseason Rankings
In the preseason rankings, released by the Valley, the Panthers were picked to finish third in the standings for women's soccer. The Panthers received 46 points and one first-place vote to round out the top three, behind Loyola and Missouri State.
Seniors Brynell Yount, Jamie Reichenberger, and Hannah McDevitt were named to the preseason all-conference squad. Yount set a school record 24 points last season, while Reichenberger set a Valley and UNI record between the posts with 11 shutouts.
"I've had teams picked first finish 5th and been 5th and finished first as an example," said Erickson. "I'm more concerned about where we finish and to control what is in our control."
Reviewing Last Season
The UNI women's soccer team reached the MVC Tournament championship for the first time in school history, finishing the season 14-5-1. UNI recorded a program-best 14 victories - besting the previous mark of 10 set in 2003.
